Free Midjourney AI Image Metadata Remover

Midjourney marks its images as AI-generated using a standard IPTC field stored in the file's XMP data. This tool finds it, shows you what it says, and removes it without changing the image.

What Midjourney puts in your images

What we found in a real file: In our test, a Midjourney JPEG held a single small XMP packet. It contained the IPTC Digital Source Type value “trainedAlgorithmicMedia” and a unique image ID. There was no EXIF and no C2PA record in that file.

IPTC Digital Source Type

In 2023 Midjourney agreed to use IPTC's Digital Source Type property to mark content as made by a generative AI tool. The value in our file was “trainedAlgorithmicMedia”, the standard label for fully AI-generated media.

A unique image ID

The same XMP packet held a GUID, a unique identifier for that specific image. It is metadata that can be used to refer back to the file.

What this tool can’t remove

This tool removes metadata only. It cannot change how a platform or detector classifies an image from its pixels, and we don't claim it will.

How to remove metadata from a Midjourney image

  1. 1

Use the original file you downloaded from Midjourney. Re-saving or screenshotting may already have dropped the fields.

  2. 2

Drop it into the tool above. It stays on your device.

  3. 3

Review the XMP item. It will be marked AI-related.

  4. 4

Choose “Remove all metadata” and download the clean copy.

Midjourney metadata questions

Does Midjourney add metadata to images?

Yes. In our test file Midjourney had stored an IPTC Digital Source Type of “trainedAlgorithmicMedia” and a unique image ID in an XMP packet.

Does Midjourney use C2PA Content Credentials?

Not in the files we tested. Our Midjourney image had no C2PA record. Other generators, such as OpenAI's and Google's, do add one.

Why would a site treat my image as AI-generated?

Some platforms and tools read the IPTC Digital Source Type field, which exists so software can recognise AI-generated media. It is the field we found in the Midjourney file, and this tool removes it.

Does Midjourney save my prompt in the file?

Not in our test file. It contained no prompt text. Other tools, such as Stable Diffusion UIs, do save prompts inside PNG files.

Will the image look different afterwards?

No. The image data is copied byte for byte. Only the metadata block is dropped, so the file becomes slightly smaller.
